Academic Status
A. Academic Recognition: 1. If a student has completed at least 12 credit hours in a semester (not including summer) with a GPA in the range of 3.20 – 3.49 they are placed on the Honor List. 2. If the GPA is in the range of 3.50 – 4.00 they are placed on the Distinguished List. The above applies, provided the student has no “I” grade and their cumulative GPA is 2.00 or above. B. Academic Probation: Students are placed on probation when their work has dropped below satisfactory level, irrespective of incomplete. They must have attempted at least 20 credit hours. Students on probation are advised to repeat courses in which they have received a grade of “D” or “F” and will not be allowed more than 13 credits / semester. A student is placed on probation under one or more of the following conditions:
1. At the end of any academic term if the student does not achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.00. Lower Bound GPA Upper Bound Rank 3.20 ≤ GPA ≤ 3.49 Honors 3.50 ≤ GPA ≤ 3.75 Distinction 3.75 ≤ GPA ≤ 4.00 High Distinction
2. If after completing 12 credits in his/her major, a student’s average n the major courses is less than 2.00, the student will be placed on school Probation, regardless of his cumulative average.
C- Academic Suspension 1. A student is suspended if he/she fails to remove the probation in two consecutive semesters regardless of incompletes and semester withdrawal (summer excluded). 2. Although a student is on probation for two consecutive semesters he/she will not be suspended at the end of any semester in which the student achieves a semester GPA of 2.2 in a minimum of 12 credits, even if the cumulative GPA remains below 2.00. 3. Students may petition for a semester of grace if they have only 12 credits to graduate. 4. Students may avoid suspension upon change of major.
D- Readmission after Suspension A student suspended for academic deficiencies must petition the admission council for readmission. Each case will be studied on its own merit. Students readmitted will be placed on probation and will be given two semesters (excluding summer) to remove the probation. Conditions for readmission: 1- Students must have had a GPA above 1.2 (students who had a GPA of 1.2 or less will not be readmitted). 2- The student must have spent at least one semester at another institution of higher learning and completed 12 credits with an average of “C” or above. 3- The student has spent one calendar year outside LIU with some work experience. Students will not be readmitted after a 2nd suspension.
